Act One: A matter of obsession

I was at the second-hand shop one Saturday morning perusing discarded books for lack of having nothing better to do. Much to my delight, I found a large one with the  title of  ‘Scotland, a Photographic Journey’ on it. Excellent, I thought, this would keep my obsession with all things Scottish going for a while. When I went to pay for it, I met up with an elderly lady who was also holding a book. We both looked simultaneously at what each was holding and smiled knowingly. I locked a man in my house once, for a whole day. A drastic way of ensuring a man stays put, you might think, but let me assure you, that was not my intention.  There must have been some Freudian undercurrent at play for this incident to take place as it did. I will let you decide.

The pub was very noisy that night, packed to sardine-can capacity with eager students—and an assortment of locals—celebrating the start of the academic year in the way inhabitants of the British Isles know best, by inebriating themselves to various degrees of oblivion. So I did not hear the first time around what was asked of me, neither did I see who was doing the asking.
